About The Inn at Bay Ledge

Come Celebrate Our Rich History and Bright Future on Frenchman Bay

The Inn at Bay Ledge has been welcoming visitors and guests to Mount Desert Island and the Acadia region for over 60 years. Originally the home of a local minister, beginning in the 1960s, the Sunset Pines Motel opened its doors to guests and we haven’t looked back. Along the way, we’ve added the back deck (a favorite among guests), balconies for upstairs rooms, the Summer Cottage, the Cottage across the street, and changed our name as an homage to our location overlooking Frenchman’s Bay. While the building has evolved in its 100+ year existence, the charm and grace with which it was built remains.

The Inn, Property & Amenities

Guests are welcomed in the Parlor with wingback chairs, a baby grand piano, and fireplace before entering the living room. Here you’ll find a reading nook, a second fireplace, and more places to gather with friends old and new. Our Bar Harbor, Maine inn has three buildings: the Main Building with 7 guest rooms, the Cottage at Sunset Pines with 3 guest rooms, and the private Summer Cottage. Each of our Bar Harbor accommodations is equipped with luxury linens, plush towels, and a private bathroom. All rooms in the Main Building and Summer Cottage offer views of the Bay, while the rooms in the Cottages at Sunset Pines are nestled in the forest.

During their stay, each guest has access to all of the amenities of the Inn including a sauna, seasonal pool, and the Inn’s private beach along Frenchman Bay. Watch the earliest sunrise in the United States from atop our 80 foot cliff, or take the stairs down to the water and hunt for sea glass. After a home made breakfast, you’ll be ready to explore Acadia National Park. Then return to the inn to relax with drinks and treats while enjoying views of the Bay and then fall into a restful night’s sleep. We can’t wait to meet you.

Find Your Way to Our Cliffside Inn

Take Route 3 onto Mount Desert Island. Drive approximately 5 miles and turn left on your second opportunity to turn onto Old Bar Harbor Road. Immediately turn right onto Sand Point Road. The Inn is a half mile farther on your left. Some GPS devices will direct you to the Cottage at Sunset Pines but please park in the circle drive in front of the Main Building to check-in.

Meet Your Hosts

Sarah and Dax Wandling (along with their bernedoodle, Stanley), purchased the Inn at Bay Ledge in October 2022, fulfilling a lifelong dream of running a bed and breakfast. Originally from the Pacific Northwest, Sarah and Dax started talking about this dream even before they were married. What they thought would be decades in the future was expedited when they saw that the Inn at Bay Ledge was for sale. After only a virtual tour with their realtor, they made an offer sight unseen in the spring of 2022 and moved from their home in Boise, Idaho later that year. They fell in love with it immediately and know that their guests will, too.

In their former careers, Sarah was a registered nurse working in hospital administration and Dax was in human resources. They now get to take their skills in care and hospitality to make every guest’s stay one that is relaxing and memorable. They can’t wait to meet you, and Stanley is particularly excited to make new friends!
