No trip to Acadia is complete without great views of the Atlantic. While you can catch fantastic views of the bay from most rooms at our boutique inn, you won’t want to miss the crashing waves along the shore. Most folks opt for the easy walk along the Ocean Path, but if you’re open to just a little bit of bouldering, you can skip the crowds while experiencing the power of the ocean along Great Head.
From Sand Beach, most folks continue walking along Ocean Path, which offers spectacular views of the Atlantic. However, if you simply walk the other direction, you can catch some of the best views in the Park, and leave most of the crowds behind. (If you have mobility issues, Great Head isn’t a good alternative as there’s some scrambling up or around boulders required.)
Great Head is a small peninsula that juts out into the Atlantic, but instead of the sandy tranquility of Sand Beach, it’s a rocky and cliff-leaden spot, where the waves crash against the rocks. We particularly like going as the tide is coming in for peak wave crashing delight.
